Living in Holland, I spent a lot of time alone with my mother when I was in my early teens. I was older by 5 years than my three siblings and could stay up later. We used to do lots of sums from an old schoolbook that contained hundreds of problems, and we would strive to be the first to solve them - long multiplications and the like. We'd also play card games.
