ABOUT KEN
Ken was born in Melbourne, still lives there and will probably die there. He is a keen 1970's fan and his father claims he could tune in 3XY on the radio before he could walk. He is looking forward to hearing from anybody with any Skyhooks, Dragon, Sherbet or Patsy Biscoe merchandise or memories. Coming soon, photos of Ken with his legendary 1970's hairstyle.
THE QUESTIONNAIRE
What is your full name?
Kenny The Paper-Boy Francis
Where is your place of birth?
Melbourne
What your career highlight so far?
So many it’s hard to choose. Meeting and interviewing my heroes, The Rolling Stones in 1995. Being involved in the 3AW tributes to George Harrison and Shirley Strachan when they sadly passed away, being able to watch Bruce and Phil create radio magic and being accepted as part of the “team”, but above all it would be the life-long friendships I have made in an industry renowned for it's cut throat, backstabbing reputation.
Tell us something about yourself we don’t already know.
I took up archery in my early teens and went on to become good enough to be asked to try out for the Australian Olympic team but didn’t want to travel away from my family at a young age so gave it away. No regrets! It stopped being fun.
What is your favourite song?
The internet is not big enough to handle my list. Love things like classic Aussie Pop/rock from Sherbet and Skyhooks, AC/DC, Hush, Split Enz, Crowded House, Stars, Jon English, Mi-Sex, Dragon, T.M.G., Ol'55, Little River Band, The Bee Gees through to The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney and Wings, The Police, The Who, KISS, the Baby Animals, Status Quo and Killing Heidi. Then there's Leo Sayer, all the great Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs, The stuff that Glen Campbell did with Jimmy Webb in the 60's, The Carpenters and Johnnie Ray. There's also all the one hit wonders... See what I mean?!!!
The 70's were the greatest years for music!
What is your favourite book?
A tie between Million Dollar Riff - a 1975 book about Skyhooks by Jenny Hunter-Brown and Ego Is Not A Dirty Word – The Story Of Skyhooks by Jeff Jenkins in 1994. Then there was Sherbet On Tour in 1976...
What is your favourite TV Show?
Bit like trying to pick a favourite song. Hey Hey (when it was on in the morning), Countdown, Superman (with George Reeves), M*A*S*H, Sounds Unlimited, The Early Bird Show, Mr. Ed, Skippy, Seinfeld, Leave It To Beaver, Shirl’s Neighbourhood, Married With Children, Cartoon Corner…The Sullivans is undoubtedly the greatest drama series this country has ever produced. Now, of course it’s a case of “if anyone told me back then that I go on to work with the star of the show...” Working with Paul Cronin has been an absolute thrill!
Any hobbies?
I collect ANYTHING to do with either Skyhooks or the 70’s to early 80’s period of 3XY.
3 dinner guests you’d love to have?
3 people no longer in my life…..I’d give anything to be able to see them again and let them know how I turned out and that I’m happy!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Aside from all the words of wisdom from my Mum (who I have to thank for EVERYTHING!!!!), one time 3XY disc jockey, John Peters, who I worked with at EON-FM once advised me in regards to radio, “never make the same mistake twice”. Goes well for life too!
What are you passionate about?
Stopping animal cruelty.
What is your pet hate?
Animal cruelty.
What is your worst habit?
I am ALWAYS late! It’s something I really need to make the effort to change!
